Hey guys (and girls)! How’s everyone been doing? Well, sorry I didn’t post something yesterday like I said I would, but I was busy (watching GMM and The Flash and forgetting you were suppose to post is busy … right?). ANYWAYS, today the WIP that I’m doing is … Mirrors!!!
And if you look at the very bottom of the page you can see how I’m doing word count wise, before and during NaNo.
Now, I’ll give you a little background on Mirrors.
Well, I started it for July’s Camp NaNoWriMo but only got 9,000ish words done. After that I started working on it more. And just a week ago I decided that I was going to finish it instead of starting a twelfth new WIP. So I opened a new document (I had already written 16 pages in Mirrors) and am starting from there for NaNo this month.
Interesting factoid:
Alice is loosely based off of my real friend named Alice. They have quite a few similarities.
And, I’ll give you the next part of Mirrors!!
*note You can find the first part here.
“So, what do you want to do? What can you do?” Alice asked uncertainly.
“Well, I’m not exactly sure. All these tubes get in the way.” I held up my arm for evidence.
“I guess talking it is then. So… how did last night go? Mom said you were scared to be left alone.”
I felt my cheeks heat up and was sure that they were tomato red. “I wasn’t scared!” But I knew that Alice knew me well enough to know that I was lying. “Okay, I was a little. I had a nightmare last night, but no murderers came,” I joked.
Alice sat in a chair by my bed. She propped her chin on her fists. “Mind telling me about it?”
I hesitated. Should I really tell her about Clara? “I’m fine, it was just a dream. There’s no use re-living unnecessary things.”
Alice nodded. “Okay. What do you think happened to you?”
I hesitated again. “I don’t know. I fell unconscious in my room. And when I woke up, I had glass in my hands and pain was everywhere.”
I briefly raised my eyes from my clasped hands to look at Alice’s green eyes. I could tell that she knew I was holding back information, but she didn’t say anything.
After a moment of silence, Alice suggested, “Why don’t we see what’s on TV?”
“Sure.”
Alice picked up the remote and turned the TV on. She flipped through a few channels before settling on a news station. “The news okay?”
“Yeah.”
The reporter was talking about a lock down at a school a few districts over. And turned my gaze to the open window. But out of the corner of my eye, I saw something I didn’t expect on the TV. I quickly turned my eyes back to the screen. I was just in time to see a hooded figure holding a young girl’s hand; but she wasn’t just any girl, she was Clara.
“Alice, did you see that?” I asked.
“See what?”
“Behind the reporter there was a figure wearing all black. He was dragging a little girl.”
“Really? I wasn’t watching. You must just be tired.” With that, Alice pulled out a book from her backpack and began to read.
“Must’ve been,” I murmured. “But if the school was in lock down, why were they walking on the sidewalk?”
“Hmm? Did you say something?” Alice asked, slowly looking up from her book.
“Nothing.”
I continued to watch the news. The reporter was just finishing up when I heard a little girl yell out my name. The reporter didn’t even turn, but finished his segment.
I was now breathing heavy. I was delusional. I should be put into an insane asylum.
“Sawyer, are you okay? You’re breaking out into a sweat.”
“I’m fine,” I assured her.
“I’m going to get a nurse just in case.” Alice closed her book and jumped up. She exited the room.
I laid my head back on the pillow. The weird liquid was probably making me see things. But, I had been seeing things before the liquid. And what kind of delusion actually gave you serious injuries?
I continued to come up with questions, and the only answer I found was that I had gone insane after Grandma’s death.
The door opened. Alice walked in, a lady following her.
“Your cousin said that you were having problems?”
“Well, I started sweating a bunch, but that’s about it. Alice tends to be a worrier.”
“Sometimes it’s good to be a worrier. And I’m Cali, one of the nurses.”
I nodded. Cali walked over to me, and checked a screen on a stand beside my bed. Next she checked the tube which I had learned to be the morphine.
“Everything seems to be in order, but I’ll have Dr. Rolland come and check on you just in case.” Cali walked out, writing something on her clipboard.
“Do you want something to drink? You look quite hot,” Alice said.
“Actually, that’d be great.”
“I take it you’d like bottled?”
“Always do.”
Alice left, once again leaving me with my thoughts.
I laid back and closed my eyes, refusing my mind to wander to the illusions. A knock came, and I looked at the door, but there was nothing there. The knock came again and this time I realized that it was coming from the window. I hesitated only a moment before I turned my eyes to the window.
A small hand was raised, about to knock again. I couldn’t see who’s hand it was. It was almost as if a toddler was trying to reach a counter top. The hand knocked for a third time. It wasn’t until then that I remembered that I was on the third floor.
So what do you guys think? Who’s Clara and what was she doing at a locked down school? Who’s at the window of a three story window? Tell me what you guys think!

I put as much bubble wrap as I could on it, so hopefully it’s not broken. 😛

Alyssa, this is really good! It should definitely be published one day. My idea would be, instead of Alice asking to put the TV on, it could be playing in the background already when it catches Sawyer’s eye. This is a bit more subtle but you don’t have to change it at all, it’s just an idea. Amazing job so far!! Love it 🙂

I noticed that you’re writing a Sleeping Beauty retelling. Is that for the Five Enchanted Spindles Contest?

Definitely, I e-mailed my short story in August. Mine is, interesting … There probably won’t be another like mine, but that’s a good thing. Good luck! I hope both our names will be on that great cover!

That’s awesome! As you can see, I’m not quite done yet, but I’m getting there! I’m hoping to send mine in in late Nov to early Dec.
And good luck! I hope as well that we’ll both make it!! 🙂

Aren’t they cool?
But anyways, here’s the link: http://www.critiquecircle.com/wordmeterbuilder.asp
You put in information (such as word count, bar color, title, etc), then copy and paste the code into the text thing on your sidebar and presto!
Hope I’ve helped! 🙂
